Start of the Exumas

We have had a great couple days and are so in love with the Exumas already! We actually have an internet connection (and it is FREE!) so thought I would post a bit about our adventures the last couple days. Hope you enjoy!!

1.5.13

Today we crossed from Nassau to the Exumas. This was a 32 mile trip across the yellow/white banks where coral heads and shifting sands are numerous. We took a longer root to avoid the middle of the banks (and hopefully avoiding the most coral heads possible). When we crossed the bank we luckily didn’t see less than 12 feet (charts called for 6 feet) and only had to avoid less than a handful of possible coral heads. We arrived at the anchorage between Leaf Cay and Allen’s Cay and our breath was taken away . . . such a beautiful place. Anchored in the area with 6 other boats. We went to shore on Leaf Cay and were greeted by about 30 endangered iguana’s looking for food. They were not shy. We also saw a 4 foot nurse shark and met one of the other boats. Can’t wait until tomorrow!

I am amazed at the beauty surrounding us. Today we explored some of the beaches near by, found and stared back at the endangered iguanas, made our way through thick brush to uncover a cool ruin of a home, and snorkeled all around the cays. We had hoped to catch dinner, but didn’t have any luck. Some boats left today and others came in to take their place. We met some of the other cruisers as well. A good day indeed.

1.7.13

We left in the morning for Norman’s Cay (all in all about a 15 mile trip). We had a great sail with winds from 15-18 knots at a close reach. It was neat to look around and see at least six other boats sailing as well . . . the days of only us are really gone. We anchored and made an early lunch, then packed up the dingy with snorkel gear and went to explore. It is so fun to snorkel with Ethan and see his expressions. He is really getting good at breathing through the snorkel. He holds onto my hand and we take in all that we can see. We snorkeled over a coral head on the west side of Norman’s Cay . . . it was covered in all sorts of fish. We kept pointing out different types and squealing underwater . . . so fun. Next we explored a small island with a great view and great beach, then to a sunken plane where we snorkeled all around and through – it was really cool. Then off to explore another beach then back to the boat for some relaxing time. I just can’t get over how beautiful it all is!!
